You can love God, know Scripture, and still find yourself living as though you have to earn what Christ has already made available to you. Sometimes the issue is not a lack of effort. It is that your everyday thoughts and choices have not caught up with your identity in Christ.
1. You keep trying to earn God’s approval
Do you feel you must do more, pray better, or get everything right before God will be pleased with you? Ephesians 1:6 reminds us that we are accepted in the Beloved. Your obedience matters, but it is a response to God’s grace, not a payment for His love.
2. You let past mistakes define who you are
You may remember what happened, but your past does not have the authority to name you. Second Corinthians 5:17 describes the person in Christ as a new creation. You can take responsibility, grow, and still refuse to build your identity around your worst moment.
3. You live from fear instead of your inheritance
Fear can make you approach life as though you are alone and unprovided for. Galatians 3:13–14 points us to Christ’s redeeming work and the blessing received through faith. Ephesians 1:3 says God has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing. What changes when you begin your day remembering what God has already said about you?
4. You measure your worth by other people’s responses
Being overlooked, misunderstood, or not chosen can hurt. But someone else’s response is not the final word on your value. Ephesians 1:4–5 speaks of being chosen in Christ and adopted through Jesus Christ. You can acknowledge disappointment without allowing it to rewrite your identity.
5. You know the truth, but you hesitate to live from it
Sometimes you are ready to move, but you keep waiting to feel completely confident. Identity is not just something to study; it shapes how you respond, decide, and take the next faithful step. Ephesians 2:10 describes us as God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. You do not have to know every step to take the one in front of you.
A moment to reflect
Which of these five signs feels familiar? Ask Holy Spirit to show you what you have been believing about yourself and what Scripture says instead. Write down one truth you want to practice this week, then identify one small action that agrees with it.
